around to the other side of the table, pulled out a chair and dropped into it. "Mind if I ask you a few questions, Colonel Driver? You've probably already been asked a couple of them, but I've got to catch up with the Lieutenant here. He got a head start on me." |

Driver nodded numbly. His eyes searched the Inspector's pallid, full-jowled face. |

"Why don't you tell me exactly what happened here tonightwhere you've been, who you were with, that sort of thing." |

The Colonel stared down at his interlocked fingers. When he tried to talk there was an emptiness in his voice. The noncommittal shrug before he began was nothing more than an unfortunate habit. He did care a great deal about what had happened to the Saint Quentin woman. He glanced at his watch as though the gesture might help to clear his mind. "I got home a little after nine. I'd been at the Officer's Club. Had supper there and stayed around afterwards to have a few drinks with a friend." |

"And all this can be verified, I suppose?" Dawkins knew he had made it sound as if there was an element of doubt in his mind. It was exactly the way he had intended for it to sound. |

Driver's eyes snapped up at the stocky little man with a surprised look on his face. "Of course. What kind of question is that?" |
